The Plastic in Our Blood

See/A/Change Fellowship Project

University of North Carolina School of the Arts

The Plastic in Our Blood focuses on the darker side of fashion, including parts of my career in costume design. It makes people look closer at how our clothing is made of plastic. By consuming these materials we are infecting our bodies and environment with microplastics. As time goes on these plastic pieces accumulate and harm our bodies in various ways. My piece draws attention to this issue by creating beauty out of an ugly truth. But unlike the fashion industry, the truth is not hidden but emphasized. This project has pushed my boundaries beyond the normal silhouettes and fabric by using unconventional materials and going to the natural basics. However, this work combines my design values by emphasizing thoughts and feelings toward the piece. My work starts with the body and ends with the viewer's feelings on the piece. It is their responsibility from that point to take action or not.
